Lifting the Whole World

Leigh Hunt often comes to mind at this time of the year. Widely known throughout the first half of the nineteenth century as both a poet and a prose writer, Hunt fought courageously against political injustice and corruption, especially as the editor of the radical Sunday newspaper The Examiner, and as a contributor to some of the leading liberal magazines of the era. Virginia Woolf recognized his great contribution to social and cultural reform when she described him as one of those “free and vigorous spirits who advance the world”.
